What are we doing? We are out in central Nicaragua, working with the communities of El Jocote and El Balsamo to help develop clean water and sustainable energy systems. So far, we have built some composting latrines, installed some solar panels, reforested several hillsides, and are beginning to build a water pump system for around 50 houses.
We are working with a Nicaraguan organization called AsoFenix, who has been doing projects like these throughout central Nicaragua for 12 years. In addition, AsoFenix is a partner with Green Empowerment, a US based NGO that drives sustainable technology projects throughout the world. Why Nicaragua? Nicaragua is the second poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere (after Haiti), with 45% of the population living in poverty at less than $1/day. The country has struggled with development after a long history of political corruption and war. Check out our work and experiences so far by reading our Blog or Project Updates. |
